| WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN WE SAY A WORDS IS PHONETIC?? Words are phonetic if they follow patterns that say they are phonetic. The most common pattern is, "in a CVC word the vowel is a 'short' vowel". Words that follow that pattern are, BY DEFINITION "phonetic". Words that do not follow the pattern -- "was", "say", "saw" and "car" , for instance, are not phonetic and have to be treated as memory-words (others call them sight-words).The idea is to recognize logical patterns and then pick words that follow those patterns. We have basically set about 85 patterns -- 26 are alphabetic and the others are based on letter-combination patterns and the position of certain letters. For instance, in all words that end in "e", the "e" is silent. If a word ends in "e" and that "e" is not silent -- we do not put it on our list. "Passe" and "posse", therefor are not on our list of phonetic words. |

When not within the combinations below; (a) all consonants are pronounced conventionally and (b) all vowels are “short” -- see page 107 You only need two patterns to pronounce the various words: (1) when a vowel is “on its own”, it is short and (2) when it is part of a letter-combination, it gives up its sound to the sound of the combination. |
