GOOGLE SEARCH TIPS

Definition (Simple): To see a quick definition for a word or phrase, simply type the word "define" or "definition" into the Google search box, then the word(s) you want defined, and then click the Enter key or the Google search button.

* Operator: Sometimes the best way to ask a question is to get Google to "fill in the blank" by adding an asterisk (*) at the part of the sentence or question that you want finished. Then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button to see you results.

Currency Conversion: Simply enter the conversion you'd like done into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

File Type Operator: To see results for a particular file type (e.g. .doc, .pdf, .xls), type your query, followed by "filetype:" followed by the three-letter code for the file type you want and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Unit Conversion: To find out how many tablespoons are in a cup, or how many acres are in a square mile, enter the conversion you'd like done into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Related Operator: To search for web pages with similar content to a given site, type "related:" followed by the website address into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Local Search (Maps): To see a map of a given area in the U.S., type the city and state or Zip code into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button. To see a larger version, click on the map on the results page to go to Google Maps.

Real Estate Search: Thinking about moving? Type "housing" and a U.S. city name or Zip code into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button. Clicking the "Go" button on the search results page will display details on individual homes that Google has indexed.

Image search: Many search results will include images automatically, but to specifically find images for a given query, type pictures, pics, or images with your search term(s) into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Info Operator: Dig deeper into what Google has collected on a given web page by typing "info:" followed by the website address into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Music Search: To see user reviews, song titles, stores where you can buy the music and other useful info, type the name of a popular musician or band and "music" into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Movies (General Showtimes): To see a list of movie showtimes for your area, type "movies" into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button. If you have previously set a location, Google will return movies for that locale; otherwise, specify the city or Zip code to see movies in your area.

Title Operator: If you want to narrow your search, Google can restrict the results to those with all of the query words in the title of the web page. Just type “allintitle:” followed by the words you're looking for in the title into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Area Code: To see the geographical location for any U.S. area code, type the three-digit area code into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Calculator: Simply enter the calculation you'd like done into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button. [sqrt (3^2 + 4^2)]

News Search: To see news about a current event, simply type some relevant keywords into the search box and Google will return any news results in addition to standard web search results.If you're not finding the results you want,add the word news to your search query.

Time: Check the time in cities around the world. Just type "time" and a city into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Stock Quotes: To get a fast stock price quote, or check the prices of your mutual funds, stocks, and ETFs, just type the ticker symbol into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Local Search (Businesses): To search for local businesses, enter the type of business you want (e.g. restaurant, repair shop) and the city and state, city and country, or U.S. Zip code into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Site Restrict Operator: Restrict your search to a specific website by typing your search query followed by "site:www.sample.com” into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Book Search: If you're looking for results from Google Book Search, enter the name of an author or book title into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button. We’ll return any book content we have as part of your standard web results.

Definition (Multiple): To view a comprehensive list of definitions for a word or phrase, type "define:" followed by a word or phrase and hit Enter or click the Google search button.

Movies (Specific Film Times): To get showtimes for movies currently in theatres, type in the title into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button. If you enter your location, Google will return your local results; otherwise we'll ask you for it on the results page.

Weather: To see the weather for many U.S. and worldwide cities, type "weather" followed by the city and state, city and country, or U.S. zip code into the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button to see a four-day forecast.

~ Operator: If you want to search not only for your search term but also for its synonyms, place the tilde sign (~) immediately in front of your query in the search box, then hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.

Patent Search: To search for U.S. patents, enter the word "patent" followed by the patent number into the Google search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google search button.
