Income distribution in the United States -- from 1917 to 2004

From an article in the NY Times on 9/18/07 by Paul Krugman. He added the four captions.

"The chart shows the share of the richest 10 percent of the American population in total income – an indicator that closely tracks many other measures of economic inequality – over the past 90 years, as estimated by the economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez. "

Note that capital gains are not included.

Middle class Americans were riding high from around 1947 to 1987, it was their golden age -- they are not doing nearly so well now.

Is the Golden Age of middle class America over forever?
