PAPER PUPPETS

Evolving from simple to complex, puppets have fascinated audiences for centuries. The first puppets may very well have been painted fingers or decorated sticks. Now it is possible to see complex puppets which require two or three people to operate.
Puppetry is a hobby the whole family can enjoy and itâs an especially good rainy day activity. Begin by creating some of the more simple puppets and you will probably want to attempt making more complicated ones. In addition to being entertaining, puppets can be motivating when used in a classroom. They are excellent aids for developing oral language and reading skills.

REMINDERS

  • Puppets will be sturdier if printed on cardstock rather than paper.
  • Laminating the puppets will also may them stronger.
  • Paper may be substituted for felt or other fabrics with some of the patterns.
  • Download and save to a disk any patterns you would like to keep - favorite sites have a way of disappearing.
  • Finger puppets can sometimes be made into pencil toppers.

PART II - STICK PUPPETS

If anything can be a puppet, then any stick can be a stick puppet. The stick may actually be the puppet, such as a painted craft stick, or the stick may be attached to the puppet, as with cardboard tubes and sticks. The ãstickä may even be an integral part of the puppet, such as the handle of a spoon. Craft sticks, tongue depressors, rulers, dowels, pencils, straws, pipe cleaners, cardboard tubes, spoons and other kitchen utensils, clothes hangers bent into shape and covered with nylon stockings, and even fly swatters (new, we trust) have all been pressed into service as stick puppets. Facial features may be painted or pasted on a stick, or pictures of entire people, animals, birds, flowers, trees, airplanes, etc. may be printed from the computer, drawn, or cut out of magazines and catalogs and pasted on a stick.
Patterns aren't really necessary for stick puppets, but for the 'artistically challenged' the sites below should serve as inspiration.
