THE FOOD CHAIN -- (an article from the NY Times of 4/17/08)
A Drought in Australia, a Global Shortage of Rice
By KEITH BRADSHER

several factors contributing to a doubling of rice prices
in the last three months.

Comment from this website follows.

It is absurd for us to have a major drought anywhere.

The world could easily tap all the rivers and even the ocean by desalination -- or save rainwater.

All that is needed is a good piping system to deliver it where it is needed. That is a pretty simple job. The pipes could be put next to highways -- or underground-- like subways.

I was taught in grammar school that water never disappears. That might not be absolutely true -- there might be some under ground that would be essentially impossible to retrieve. For the most part, though, -- we have all the water we need -- it simply is not in the right place.
