A confession of ignorance and naivite from a previously apolitical American
In the past, I really did not think it made much difference who was President.
I thought both major parties were more or less the same and the country could
not really be messed up by a particular President or either party, in light
of (a) the existence of a free press (b) a reasonably good court system
and (c) the checks
and balances provided by the Constitution.
I am now horrified to find that I was ignorant and naive and one President
can really screw things up if he inveigles a war and thereby sidesteps
the normal
constitutional checks and balances. And it is much worse if he has a compliant,
same-party Congress
This next election is really important. If Bush gets back in with a Republican majority in Congress -- I think we are in for real trouble.
